about

An ancient song!

Where Was I When I Left was originally performed by Jeff's early band called Almost Anyone with the late Gary Guthrie. John was also briefly in the band too although not for the pinacle of the band's career opening for New Order's first Texas show at Club Foot in 1983.

Written by Jeff around 1983.

This song was originally sung by Jeff who quickly turned the vocal duties over to John for this complete re-do.

A remastered version of the original is available in a limited edition vinyl release courtesy of Dead Wax Records. Check it out here: www.deadwaxrecords.es/releases_distantwaves_II.php

Like all our stuff this version was recorded at our HQ in Austin, TX sent electronically to Max way up in Washington State for real drums (we start with a drum machine and then typically remove most of it from the finished product) and mixing suggestions and then finished up back at our HQ.

Recorded on ProTools
Fender Jazz Bass
Jezzmaster guitar
Synths by Roland (RS-09), Dave Smith (Mopho, X4), Novation (Bass Station) & Korg (Minilogue)

Written by Jeff Campbell. Recorded, Engineered and Produced by Masquerade As Angels

Mixed by Ian Gockel of Finite Fidelity

Finished May, 2017
John Hawkins - Vocals
Jeff Campbell - Bass Guitar, Guitars, melodica, Synths, Programming, Engineering
Max Brody - Drums

the late Gary Guthrie - original synth parts

We like music. We play music.

John played in Crust and Talmadge D'Amour.

Max played in Ministry.

Jeff played in Tanz Waffen and with Lene Lovich.

We make the kind of music we'd like to hear (but rarely do). Combining guitars, synth, drums, electronics to create atmosphere and tension. Thought provoking lyrics and vocals designed to take you someplace new.

We made music in the 80's and 90's but we aren't retro. We have loads of influences but don't sound like anyone else. We have all played in cool bands but we don't sound like any of those.

We aren't afraid to strip down to just guitars, bass and drums, but we aren't afraid to get into detailed processed mixes heavy on electronic instrumentation either.

Live performance has yet to be fully realized but is coming and won't be (as John puts it so endearingly) "two old guys and a laptop".

Masquerade as Angels play music that is genuine and which is written for their love of the post-punk musical era.

They play the kind of music that you want to hear.

Former members of Ministry, Crust, and Tanz Waffen – John Hawkins, Jeff Campbell & Max Brody make music combining elements of rock, darkwave, Industrial and post-punk.

Their combined musical experiences have added greatly in honing these songs. They find the perfect balance between great songs, musicianship, and electronic experimentation, always maintaining a group dynamic, cohesive sound, with atmosphere and tension.
